Why is my Grout Looking “Nasty”?
Grout is porous, allowing contamination to penetrate the surface and become permanently discolored and stained. Harsh cleaners such as acid and bleach only make the problem worse by eating more pores in the grout, thereby compounding the problem and requiring cleaning more often, or worse, degrading the grout to the point where water penetrates through, causing very costly dry rot repairs. In wet places such as showers, molds, mildew, algae, bacteria, and fungus grow deep inside the grout. Aside from being unsightly, they pose a threat to our health. Is your caulk cracking or pulling away from your tiles? It may be time for re-caulking. Grout is a cement product that seals between the tiles. The corner areas around sinks and tubs, however, are prone to movement from settlement, vibration, expansion, etc.
Therefore, these areas need to be caulked. We use the longest-lasting caulk available; however, over time, all caulk slowly loses its flexibility. When it is no longer flexible enough to do its job, it will either crack or pull away from the tile. It is time to re-caulk. Keep your floors shining with routine care
In commercial applications and some homes where mopping is the routine cleaning method, the floor may need to be redone periodically. This is because the grout is the lowest point, and a buildup of minerals, dirt, and soap from the water will occur on top of our Preservation-ONE. Just as you can’t get water spots off of glass, which is completely non-porous, getting them off of the grout will be equally hard.
To avoid this, we recommend routine cleaning with a light solution of liquid dish soap and water. Then it was rinsed to prevent soap scum buildup and dried to prevent water spot buildup. This is best accomplished with a wet or dry vacuum cleaner. Our team will be happy to help you with any questions.
